Sunlight has a vertical wavelength. Once it bounces off a surface, reflected sunlight has a horizontal wavelength, and the technical term for this phenomena is "polarization". A shiny surface (such as snow or water) refelects the most light, causing glare.

Polarized lenses filter out the horizontal wavelengths of reflected light, while alowing tinted, natural light to reach the eye. They also make your eyes more comfortable on those brighter, cloudy days when you feel like squinting your naked eye due to the defracted light that is filtering through the clouds. Chances are if you have wondered why someone is wearing sunglsses on a cloudy day, they were enjoying the benefits of a polarized lens.
